Road Trip

Started this awhile ago, not much written yet, but I am hoping that by posting, there will be some encouragement to continue this.

Summary: After the destruction of SunnyHell, Xander leaves Buffy and the rest in Cleveland and continues East, trying to find peace with himself and the world. Andrew tags along because he knows that Buffy just thinks him a bother.

Rating: PG at the moment, probably NC-17 by the end.

Warnings: None really. Some Xander!Emotional Torture and Andrew!USTing for Xander, but that is about it, really.

Disclaimer: Not mine, not real, not for profit.

Remember, I mainline feedback into my veins!

Somewhere on Interstate 75, heading towards Florida

Andrew has lost count of the number of rest stops they’ve driven by today. It must have been in excess of one hundred. He doesn’t know where they were going and has the suspicion that Xander doesn’t either. Maybe he’ll get lucky and they won’t stop until they’ve reached Disney World. He’s always wanted to go to Disney. His parents took Tucker one summer, but Andrew had been at science camp and hadn’t been able to go.

“Xander?” Andrew whispers.

“Yeah?” Xander doesn’t look at Andrew when he answers. Andrew can count on one hand the number of words Xander has spoken since leaving St. Louis.

“Can we stop soon? I’m hungry. And I have to use the bathroom.” Andrew has tried hard not to whine. He knows Xander has very little patience for whining, and doesn’t want to give the man more reason to dislike him.

“Yeah.” Xander sighs. “I’m hungry too. We’ll pull off at the next exit.”

“Thanks.”

Xander grunts and turns the radio up. Andrew twists in his seat to watch the scenery passing by. There isn’t much to see except cows and fields. And some violet mountains in the distance. Andrew imagines that the mountains are guardians, watching over their lands, protecting what was theirs.

He wishes he had remember to bring something to read. He’ll have to find a bookstore in the next town. Load up on some comics to pass the time.

Then he remembers he gets carsick, so decides to skip that idea.

Maybe he could get a book on tape. Something fun. A romance maybe. Or a mystery. Not horror though. Andrew has had enough horror to last a long time.

They don’t speak again until they are seated at a faded booth in a run down local diner in a town called Kalamazoo. It’s somewhere in the middle of Georgia.

Andrew is pretending to read the menu and trying to ignore his bursting bladder. If he can hold it until after lunch, he won’t have to go again for a few hours. But if he goes now, he knows he’ll need to stop sooner.

“So, um, you know what you’re getting?” Andrew asks. He hates trying to make small talk when he knows Xander likes quietness. But, Andrew always feels like he has to fill silence with babble.

“A hamburger I guess.”

Xander is making an effort not to be annoyed. Andrew can tell by the way the man heaves a sigh and places the menu in front of him.

“Oh. Me too. Red meat is great!” Andrew is lying. He would rather have a salad, but he doesn’t want Xander to think he is a wimp or anything.

Xander smirks and says, "Order for me. I'm going to the bathroom."

Andrew nods and watches as Xander disappears around the corner. He tries not to think the worst- that Xander will leave him. He knows that Xander would never do such a thing, but Andrew is used to being left behind.

"So, what can I getcha, hon?" the blonde waitress asks, popping a large pink bubble with her gum.

"Um, too hamburgers and fries," Andrew replies, trying to smile back. "Oh, and a chocolate milk for me."

"What about your friend?"

Andrew likes her accent. It's all soft and pretty. "Um, he'll have a coffee. Or a Pepsi. No, coffee. No cream or sugar. He likes it black."

"Sure thing hon."

Xander comes back and they sit in silence.

So....what do you all think?
