Harry Potter question

Ok, for all you Potter freaks, what year was Harry born? I thought it was 1981 and the books take place in the 90's, but in a lot of fics i've read they put his birthdate in 1987, making Harry's first year 1998. Am I wrong? Anyway, hope someone can answer!
